In ancient times the city gates were built in honor of the deity of that city. Walking through the gate meant you were paying tribute to and accepting lordship of that deity while making the effort to go through the smaller gate meant you were not admitting that deity's lordship.
Earlier this week I read the statistic that although 95 percent of Americans claim to believe in God, only 45 percent attend church and only 10 percent have what the poll called a “devoted faith”, essentially someone who has given their entire being over to the Lord, a person whose relationship with God goes so far as to impact the rest of their life.
Upon reading this my first thought was, Oh snap! There are a lot of people who claim to believe in God but aren’t completely devoted to him!
Honestly, it made me sad. God is offering a life so great, yet people choose not to take it and settle for a much more mediocre one. I wanted to figure out why this great gap existed between nominal believers and real disciples. Part of it, I think, is that maybe they’ve never truly experienced God. Maybe they don’t know his unconditional love, his passion or his grace, all of which makes him so great.
Many people view God as being far away, indifferent toward our everyday lives. They may see him as just an old historical figure in a book. All they’ve ever known is a God who seems dead when it comes to their own lives, so why would they be captivated by him or persuaded to build their life around him?
I want to show people my God is a living God. I want to tell them of his great love. How will they ever know if we don’t tell them? We might be the first small taste that will lead them to a God who will totally captivate their hearts. Let’s get out there and love on some people, show them that Christianity is neither dull nor dead! Allow them to experience him for who he truly is, the living God!
Hey kaylee this is soo true I think that a lot of people see God as the punisher, I mean as a jehova’s witness growing up basically I always heard u ha e one chance alone to do right and if u fall ur down no redemption, but as u say we need to go out and show people we love them, thanks for puttin to words what has been on my mind last couple of weeks
I think we need to ask ourselves how our varying commitment level plays out in our life. The mediocre life is the one in which one is not grounded or tied to a greater truth. The Bible tells us we should be cold or hot rather than lukewarm.
If one person says they’re one thing but isn’t even committed to being the thing they said they were, how more lukewarm can you get?
