God and Coffee, by Kaylee Kidwell

If you know me at all, you probably know that I love having my morning coffee. In fact, I can’t start the day without a cup. As soon as I wake up I just crave it, and so I may need to admit that I have a slight addiction. The other morning, while sipping my coffee and reading my Bible, I came across Psalm 84:1-2.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.”

This may sound odd, but as soon as I read this passage I thought about my coffee. Coffee and God are not at all on the same level, of course, but immediately I wondered about what if I craved God in the same way I craved  coffee. With the same passion and desire, knowing that just as I’m not able to make it through a day without my coffee, likewise I’m not able to last one day without Him.

In this verse there is so much passion. David longed for more of the Lord, he desired so much more of his presence. Like David, I want to always be that desperate for my Lord. What I have come to realize is that God’s presence should not be a weekly or a monthly thing in my life, just in times of need, but like my coffee it should be an addiction, a behavior in which, each and every day, I’ll never feel like I’ve had enough.

When was the last time you yearned for God in this way? Have you ever desired his presence, everyday and at all times simply craving him? I encourage you this week to make time for Him. Set aside time in your busy schedule just to be with your Lord.

Awesome thoughts, Kaylee. Being a fellow coffee-phene I understand where you’re coming from. It seems in my life the small distractions that keep me from soaking up God’s presence like I could are hardly worth what I’m forfeiting all the while.
Thanks for verbalizing this for us!
